RIML: Bob Moses

We were in Los Angeles earlier this year when I we first heard Bob Moses:  a friend had placed their song in the soundtrack of his documentary.  The song, Tearing Me Apart, was stunning: a fresh re-combination of down tempo with house but still containing enough vocals and hooks to make it translate well.  Days Gone By became a well listened to album.  Therefore it was exciting news when we booked them on Records In My Life.  However, because my band Combine the Victorious was playing a show in Harrison Hot Springs that same afternoon, I couldn't make the shoot.  Benn McGuire and Jeffrey Powell stepped in to film the interview with Charles, using a conference room in the band's hotel for a setting.  Happily, Isabelle and I did manage to see them perform later that evening.  It was a night of massive bass tones!  I was really taken with them, and they were blatantly grateful to the Vancouver homecoming crowd.  At one point mid set Jimmy Vallance elatedly crossed the stage to bro-hug Tom Howie in celebration of selling out the Commodore Ballroom; something they admitted to being a dream of theirs when they were growing up here.

In the interview they tell us about the first albums they'd ever purchased, their mutual love of James Blake as well as a fresh album recommendation.  Check it out, they're good young men.

RIML: Peter Bjorn and John

We met with Peter Bjorn and John just after their soundcheck at Venue, Vancouver last month on the first leg of their N American tour for Breaking Point.  The three men were funny, charming and well informed about all sorts of music, from Van Halen, thru Bob Dylan back to Duke Ellington and John Coltrane with a few Swedish albums thrown in the mix from early childhood memories.  Good chaps, very fun to hang with, and we hope you enjoy this episode as much as we did recording it!

RIML: Zakk Wylde

I was pleasantly surprised meeting guitar hero Zakk Wylde.  He is a well travelled man who sees the world in balanced terms, but is still comfortable with his opinion.   He gave us a ten minute dialog about the upcoming US election but was mainly excited by the potential dirt digging and slinging theatrical value of the debates!  Then we talked music and I think all three of us were surprised by his first influential artist.  Then, of course Ozzy Osbourne and Black Sabbath are mentioned, and he recited the story he told as he inducted them into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame.  Benn McGuire also caught some great camera work at the show which we feature in between records, including a solo from within the audience, all while still connected to the stage with a 100' long guitar cable!

Andrew W.K. on #RIML

Andrew W.K. joined us for a very entertaining and informative Records In My Life last week while he was in Vancouver as a part of Mural Fest.   We managed to film an interview before his sold out show at the Cobalt, wherein Andrew gave us some insight into what motivates and inspires him.  Though he was a little tight lipped about actually naming albums that influenced, he offered up his unwavering love of music from classical masters that he''d studied on piano from the age of four!  One of the funniest interviews we've ever filmed, with a very singular artist who in his own words says "It is my destiny to party."  And we all hope Andrew W.K. can continue to party and entertain for many decades to come!  This is a very good episode, hope you enjoy it!

Broods on Records In My Life

We had a really fun interview with Georgia and Caleb Nott from the New Zealand band Broods.   They are on a world tour in support of their second album "Conscious" and we managed to chat with them before their soundcheck at the Vogue Theater here in Vancouver, Canada.  The siblings had an obvious dynamic about them, and both were very familiar with each other's favorites and influences.  Really great interview from a talented young band who gave a slick performance later that evening.  One of our best shows yet!

ACTORS on Records In My LIfe

We had the chance to interview Jason Corbett of the Vancouver band ACTORS and asked him to reveal some of his favorite local Vancouver band albums.  We filmed this on a cloud-free day down by the water at Science World here in Vancouver, something very different for the usually studio bound Corbett!  Among his list were albums from War Baby, Red Vienna, the still to be released new album from Sex With Strangers, as well as Combine the Victorious' "Autonomous" album (the source of the the theme music for the RIML series!) After giving us details on the local albums he then revealed a top three from his personal collection, including a detailed story of buying The Clash's London Calling. 

RIML with July Talk

We had an interesting time filming this interview.  July Talk were opening for Red Hot Chili Pepppers at the Festival d'ete de Quebed this past July.  Because of a media blackout backstage, wherein no one was allowed within 100 meters of the RCHP we were carefully escorted around the backstage environment, and told to wait at the side of the stage until our interview time was at hand.  Then, mistakenly, our festival co-ordinator accidently led us through the Chili's change room in search of July' Talk's change room, wherein we were confronted by an angry road manager and told in no uncertain terms to leave, immediately.  Fortunately we then found the proper change rooms and met the highly excited Peter and Leah of July Talk who were happy to chat with us about the music that set them on their course as musicians. 

A crowd of 90 000 people gathered that evening for the show, and we could hear the building crowd gaining size and excitement in the background during our interview.  Still an hour and half away from the opening act's showtime, there were football chants and general crowd shouting happening so loudly that they cut into our lavalier mics, which you can hear during the interview.

Leah and Peter were visibly excited, as this was the biggest date July Talk had ever played but they still were grounded enough to give us some cool albums to listen to and went into detail about what turned them on.
