Video: I'm Gonna MIss Ya

I have the pleasure of shooting camera for this video by Baylii for his song "I'm Gonna MIss Ya."

We filmed around Vancouver on a few days of shooting and then I left it in Adam's hand to put the edit together. It was a fun shoot and the bedroom scene was the first time I've actually attempted anything of that sort, so a learning experience too! Gotta admit the stairs up from Wreck Beach proved to be the exercise I needed for that week!  Check it out, it's a good song and Baylii would love your support!

Archive: First Pure Interview on Much Music

This is a clip recorded from Much Music back in 1992. Interviewer Terry David Mulligan caught up with singer Jordy Birch on the beach at English Bay in the Wesy End of Vancouver to discuss the upcoming debut release Pureafunalia. It's fun to see Vancouver back in 1992.

Best Tonight (official video) - Combine the Victorious

We proudly present the Wayne Hoecherl directed video for Best Tonight by Combine the Victorious.  The video features Taya Morrow, who choreographed and performed the dancing in a mysterious tunnel to great effect.  Special thanks must be given to Taya and Wayne as well as Dan Kozma for his excellent camera work and editing as well as Chris Hooper for assisting with the dolly during the shoot.

Taya Morrow was styled by Isabelle Dunlop, and you can see her dancing to great effect in flowing scarves and wool outfits. Hair and makeup was courtesy of Charlene Santaga of Bambu Salon, Vancouver BC.

Big thanks to everyone involved in this project, we're very pleased with how lovely it's all turned out!

What inspires Sex With Strangers? #RIML

Records In My Life had the pleasure of interviewing Hatch Benedict and Cory Price of the band Sex With Strangers just before soundcheck at the Fox Cabaret this October.  Sex With Strangers
is celebrating their sixth studio album, "Discourse," produced by Jason Corbett (Northern Light Records).
Sex With Strangers have a new video out for the first single Gift of Fear and are already in production with the follow up.

The band goes back a long ways with me, and a big part of my love for them has always been their humour.  I think the interview shows a glimpse into the world of Sex With Strangers, though it would take more than six minutes to capture the energy of friends making music together for 20 years!

In case you've missed SWS's immense repertoire over the past decade, here's a fun place to start.  New City Anthem from their Tokyo Steel album.

RIML: Bob Moses

We were in Los Angeles earlier this year when I we first heard Bob Moses:  a friend had placed their song in the soundtrack of his documentary.  The song, Tearing Me Apart, was stunning: a fresh re-combination of down tempo with house but still containing enough vocals and hooks to make it translate well.  Days Gone By became a well listened to album.  Therefore it was exciting news when we booked them on Records In My Life.  However, because my band Combine the Victorious was playing a show in Harrison Hot Springs that same afternoon, I couldn't make the shoot.  Benn McGuire and Jeffrey Powell stepped in to film the interview with Charles, using a conference room in the band's hotel for a setting.  Happily, Isabelle and I did manage to see them perform later that evening.  It was a night of massive bass tones!  I was really taken with them, and they were blatantly grateful to the Vancouver homecoming crowd.  At one point mid set Jimmy Vallance elatedly crossed the stage to bro-hug Tom Howie in celebration of selling out the Commodore Ballroom; something they admitted to being a dream of theirs when they were growing up here.

In the interview they tell us about the first albums they'd ever purchased, their mutual love of James Blake as well as a fresh album recommendation.  Check it out, they're good young men.

Broods on Records In My Life

We had a really fun interview with Georgia and Caleb Nott from the New Zealand band Broods.   They are on a world tour in support of their second album "Conscious" and we managed to chat with them before their soundcheck at the Vogue Theater here in Vancouver, Canada.  The siblings had an obvious dynamic about them, and both were very familiar with each other's favorites and influences.  Really great interview from a talented young band who gave a slick performance later that evening.  One of our best shows yet!

Broods on RIML is hosted and produced by Charles Brownstein
Direction and editing by Mark Henning
Videography by Benn McGuire and Mark Henning
Animations and logo by Susana Ramirez

This episode features the Broods song "Free" from their Conscious album
Theme song is "Best Tonight" by Combine the Victorious from their "Autonomous" album.
