RIML: Peter Bjorn and John

We met with Peter Bjorn and John just after their soundcheck at Venue, Vancouver last month on the first leg of their N American tour for Breaking Point.  The three men were funny, charming and well informed about all sorts of music, from Van Halen, thru Bob Dylan back to Duke Ellington and John Coltrane with a few Swedish albums thrown in the mix from early childhood memories.  Good chaps, very fun to hang with, and we hope you enjoy this episode as much as we did recording it!

Andrew W.K. on #RIML

Andrew W.K. joined us for a very entertaining and informative Records In My Life last week while he was in Vancouver as a part of Mural Fest.   We managed to film an interview before his sold out show at the Cobalt, wherein Andrew gave us some insight into what motivates and inspires him.  Though he was a little tight lipped about actually naming albums that influenced, he offered up his unwavering love of music from classical masters that he''d studied on piano from the age of four!  One of the funniest interviews we've ever filmed, with a very singular artist who in his own words says "It is my destiny to party."  And we all hope Andrew W.K. can continue to party and entertain for many decades to come!  This is a very good episode, hope you enjoy it!

Records In My Life: Big Black Delta

I will confess that I am a Big Black Delta fan, so when the opportunity came to interview him for an episode of RIML I insisted we take it! The first Big Black Delta album from 2013 was on heavy rotation on my phone for months, and I still find it entertaining three years later.  BBD recently released a follow up album, Trágame Tierra and we caught up with Jonathan Bates before his appearance at the Biltmore Cabaret here in Vancouver last week.  A very affable man, with an obvious love of all kinds of music, our conversation lasted over two hours and ended with producer Charles Brownstein and I sharing a glass of whiskey backstage while Jonathan related tales of touring and the odd concerned word about the state of the USA.  A very fun interview that could have lasted hours if we'd had even more battery life in the recorders.   Please have a look, and check out the new album, it's a solid and creative follow up to the debut full length.

Records In My Life: Lucius

We caught up with members of the Brooklyn band Lucius on their tour bus before their show at  Imperial Vancouver last week.  Almost every band member dropped in for a quick little cameo and we managed to meet up with 4/5ths of the band.  Drummer Dan Molad held a very fun conversation with Charles and discussed some of his all time favorite albums including his sisters band The Last Wish, while singer Jess Wolfe revealed her love for Roy Orbison, and guitarist Peter Lalish dropped in at the end for a quick chat about Chris Cohen and  Warren G. A really fun interview.

We caught up with Mathieu Santos from the band Ra Ra Riot before their show at the Biltmore Cabaret here in Vancouver, Canada. Records In My Life: Leisure Cruise

Northern Transmissions and Boutique Empire present the Leisure Cruise episode of Records In My Life.  We caught up with Leah Siegel and Dave Hodges  of the band Leisure Cruise outside the UBC Thunderbird Arena before their show with Metric and Deathcab for Cutie.  The two were enthusiastic with their praise of artists and music and dropped albums from Beastie Boys, The Beatles, The Clash and Otis Redding among their list.  It was a windy day on the hill where we interviewed them so apologies in advance for the audio on this clip.

After their performance here in Vancouver the band was flown to Wisconsin to perform at a rally in support of Bernie Sanders!

Records In My Life: Saul Williams

Northern Transmissions and Boutique Empire present another episode of Records In My Life, this week featuring poet, actor, singer, rapper, spoken word artist Saul Williams.  Saul was a real pleasure to meet, we hung out backstage at the Commodore for over an hour waiting for headliner K-OS to complete his soundcheck and spent the time chatting about various bands, and influencial albums.  He has had a colourful career, starting in Brooklyn and now living in LA, and like most stage actors has a strong love for musicals, which is why he leads off his choices with the original cast recording of Sarafina, and then moves onto Jesus Christ Superstar!  Then, and we didn't have time to include the entire segment, but he spoke at great length about the Bristol movement in the 90's, siting Portishead, Tricky, Goldie, LTJ Bukem and added in Bjork.

"I may have been living in Brooklyn at the time but my apartment was Bristol!"

We all had a marvelous time hanging out with this talented artist, and wish him great success on his soon to be released album MartyrLoserKing.

This week's episode features Jacob and John from the Los Angeles band Health.  We filmed them in the hidden ballroom of the former Biltmore Hotel amid the mirrors and chandeliers.  Jake and John were filled with stories and humour and offered up a collection of esoteric albums from their past.  They spoke about the Stooges, Steve Reich, Crass and Ex Models as well as Andrew WK and Xui Xui.  Truly one of the funnier episodes we've filmed.  Check it out!
