JOSö debut album

I'm really excited to write about this project. Back in January when I first took over Ryan Dahle's old studio in the Song City music studio complex I began working with Johanna Sö. Johanna is a virtuoso violinists, classically trained, graduate of Carnegie Mellon, touring violinist with the West Coast Celtic band The Town Pants and now a singer songwriter.

Back in December of 2020 during the dark winter months of Covid 19 lockdowns and social isolation Johanna approached me about recording some of her music. Initially I thought it would be a violin album with one or two vocal songs. When January rolled around however she showed up at the studio with 6 complete songs and a backpocket full of other ideas. We set out with an intention to record the songs with a central focus on the violin as that was her primary instrument. However those first intentions were not even remotely as encompassing as the final record has proven to be.

Co-producing this album with me is Duane Keogh. Duane is one half of the core members to The Town Pants. I have worked with Dave and Duane on almost every The Town Pants album they've made since 1997 so Duane and I have a long history and friendship between us. With his help we approached the task of capturing Johanna's ideas.

I'm extremely proud of the work we've all done on this record. The final scope of the music is so immense and beautiful that it still makes me smile a bit when I listen to certain sections. We took 8 songs and crafted them into 8 unique journeys, all held together around the violin and Johanna's voice but each branching out with their own melodic intentions. From the more direct approach to songs like These Scares or You're Lovable, to the quirky jazzlike Purple Piano and ending with the epic 7 minute Breathe we covered a lot of ground sonically. Throughout, the playing is superb: with shout outs to the brilliant drumming of Terence F Clark and the outstanding basswork from Hugh McMillan, the vibrant cello of Cara Fox all complimenting Johanna's violin work. It would be an understatement to say the musical results are some of the best music I've ever recorded.

In the following weeks I would like to go into some detail surrounding this music, digging into the multitrack to expose some of the lush layers we created with vocals and violin stacks. There are countless exceptional auditory segments that still surprise me when I solo them up in a mix. The writing and playing on this album are great and deserve to be written about in detail!

More to come!

Thanks for reading.

Video: I'm Gonna MIss Ya

I have the pleasure of shooting camera for this video by Baylii for his song "I'm Gonna MIss Ya."

We filmed around Vancouver on a few days of shooting and then I left it in Adam's hand to put the edit together. It was a fun shoot and the bedroom scene was the first time I've actually attempted anything of that sort, so a learning experience too! Gotta admit the stairs up from Wreck Beach proved to be the exercise I needed for that week!  Check it out, it's a good song and Baylii would love your support!

Momento - Sex With Strangers' New Video

It is with great pride that we present the brand new, live off the floor, video of Sex With Strangers single "Momento'.   We shot this clip a couple weekends back at the rather bizarrely horror movie themed Sanctuary Rehearsal studios in East Vancouver.  Everybody showed up and killed it.  Lead singer Hatch Benedict is in top form, and I think this is the first time I've seen his live-show energy captured on camera.  But I suppose that is because it is live!

Sex With Strangers - Momento was directed, edited, recorded and mixed by Mark R Henning
Filmed at Sanctuary Rehearsal Studios, Vancouver BC
Videography by Benn McGuire and Henning
Mixed and edited at Boutique Empire Recording by Henning
Audio mastering by Craig Waddell at Gotham Studio

Special Thanks to Wayne Hoecherl for his assistance in regards to camera equipment!

Momento will be a part of the new ep Space and Time, produced by Jason Corbett, arriving April 5th 2016.

Contributor Vince Tuckwood drops his new album!

Author/musician Vince Tuckwood has just released his brand new album Turquoise Cyan Sapphire.   As a long time collaborator and contributor to the Boutique Empire team we are pleased to share it with you.   A strong move forward with his writing and performing, Turquoise Cyan Sapphire offers an update on his former music and sees his production step up on all sides.  As he put it in his own blog, these songs represent the closest he feels comfortable to playing traditional Blues bases songs.  Thus the blue tinged title to the work!

Vince has even enlisted his daughter on trumpet on a couple of the songs  making this release the first Tuckwood multigenerational album.  Have a listen for yourself, and of course if you enjoy it please feel free to purchase a copy to encourage more music from Vince in the future!

New Music: Vince Tuckwood "Grope"

Our sole east coast contributor, auther and musician Vince Tuckwood, has just revealed his latest album: Grope. A guitar laden collection of indie rock songs all originally written for his former UK band (not so coincidently also called Grope),  the new album is much heavier and upbeat than his previous work and contrasts nicely with his previous Stark release.

Have a listen on the Vince Tuckwood bandcamp page: downloads available now, and cd format available just in time for Xmas.

New single from Combine the VIctorious

Combine the Victorious has a new single: Brotherhood.

"Brotherhood” is a radio friendly song that is upbeat in tempo, has a fluid positive melody and good lyrics. Speaking of taking on the world after meeting in high school, its about two people sticking together and making their own way through life and looking out for one another. This is a very well put together song. Lush sounding at times and then going to the bare bones of the song is a brilliant way to capture a positive feeling/thought/emotion. Well done!

last.fm royaties

Alright, the following may be either depressing or inspiring for our fellow recording artists. We, as in Boutique Empire, just received our royalties for the 4th quarter of radio play on the last.fm site. There were something like 2700 radio plays accumulated over the past few months and the royalties came in at $1.70. So while this represents a payout of approximately $0.0005 per play, you can see how it might add up if the acts were to attain widespread popularity.

Consider that last.fm is a free site: free to the user, and free to artists to upload their songs onto. Now consider it's revenue is mainly gained through advertising and you never Hear an add, you only have to avert your eyes from the one's displayed on the page. There are no announcers pressing their false sense of enthusiasm on you, there are no insipid commercials to drain your consciousness, and thankfully there isn't any music you have to endure if you don't like it. (that skip ahead button is quite handy!) While we may consider $1.70 quite paltry compared to commercial radio play, it still represents a minuscule revenue for the indie artists and labels out there. Nobody's paying their rent, but these are the early days, and perhaps we're starting to see models appear on the Internet that offer solutions for the modern musician. I know iLike.com is offering something similar on their site as well.

Saying all this, please check out last.fm. Feel free to start at the Boutique Empire page and wander from there. It is a wonderful resource for finding new and old music. Just imagine it as a radio station rather than a site like myspace. Enter a group or artist that you enjoy into the player and then allow the software to start choosing other "like" music for you to enjoy. At first it may seem a bit obvious or weird, but the software learns your tastes and starts making more informed decisions of what to send you as you listen longer. Try it out, you may really enjoy it.
